Industry
Northwestern Ontario's economy has been sustained largely by natural resource based exportation. From mining to forestry, our region continues to develop largely from these types of jobs and the services that support them.
Much change in rare earth metals and gold prices and demand have brought back new exploration to the area. The majority of world mining shifted decades ago to cheaper areas such as South Africa where labour and refining costs are extremely cheap. Rising demand and increased cost have allowed the reopening of several exploratory mines from back in the 1950's. Kenora is looking towards extensive growth in mining as pulp and paper jobs are becoming virtually extinct. Read more about our industries below: |
